Join the fight against hunger in our local community by creating one-of-a-kind ceramic bowls this weekend at Lee College to support the Houston Food Bank’s annual Empty Bowls campaign.
The Lee College Bowl-A-Thon will be held from 9 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Ceramics Studio inside the McNulty Haddick Complex on campus. The college will provide professional and amateur ceramists alike with all the tools needed to craft their custom bowls: space to work, clay, glazes, trimming and firing. Instructor Jennifer Herzberg, chairwoman of the Ceramics Department, is leading the event.
Launched as a grassroots effort of artists and craftspeople around the world, Empty Bowls is an annual campaign aimed at helping the hungry. The empty bowls are intended to serve as a reminder of all those who have no food to eat.
The handcrafted bowls created at Lee College will be donated to Empty Bowls Houston and sold in May at fundraising event benefiting the Houston Food Bank. For a minimum $25 donation, fundraiser attendees will be able to select a bowl of their choice and receive a lunch of soup provided by Whole Foods Market and prepared by the Houston Food Bank Community Kitchen.
The Houston Food Bank feeds 800,000 hungry people each year by distributing food through nearly 600 relief agencies in 18 southeast Texas counties. The organization estimates that on any given day, 66,000 people in southeast Texas have no food to eat — including 5,000 children.
